Learn how to be the Modern Day goalkeeper.

The modern-day goalkeeper needs to be able to read the game at a high level in all phases of play (attacking/defending/transition in the run of play and on dead balls) and be consistent with their decision making in those instances. I see a lot of goalkeepers that don't read a team's shape, understand principles of play, recognize space and the element of pressure, and lack the vocal organization in the penalty box, as well as play developing through the thirds of the field.

Goalkeepers need to be able to play various service with both feet (possess the ability to break lines in wide and central areas), they need to support the play up the field, they need to have a presence, they need to be athletic and technically sound (holding balls they should hold and not give up senseless rebounds) consistently solid in winning aerial service in the box and angle play. In addition, the tactical component is pivotal and being able to process the game quickly.

The best goalkeepers are consistent in every environment. They make the saves they are supposed to make all the time and also are able to make the 1 or 2 elite saves when called upon and that comes from studying the game, understanding your positioning/teammates, and clean technique in your execution of the save.
